What is SEO?

So, what exactly is SEO? Wiki defines SEO as the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In simpler terms, it's optimizing each page of your website to get more traffic. When you search for something on the internet, you type in what is referred to as "keywords" and that will display all websites that are relevant to that specific keyword(s). For example, type in fishing in Google. You'll probably get something like the following:

 

Now, take a look at the first two listed in the search results. Fishing.com and basspro.com are listed in the top two. That is some great SEO work as the keyword fishing is a "general" keyword that pulls 164 million results! To be on the first page for that keyword is quite an accomplishment and takes A LOT of work, time and money. If you search for a specific keyword like "fishing pole", you will notice that the results are less. Your objective is to find keywords that buyers are using to find products or services. In other words dig a little deeper and select more descriptive or "long tail keywords" that will bring more targeted traffic. Using the example above, a long tail keyword might be a specific fishing pole model. Fewer people will be searching for it but those that are searching for that particular fishing pole are most likely to buy. Why else would they be looking for a specific fishing pole model? Get the idea?

SEO is not a quick process and takes a bit of time before you see any results. You should question the legitimacy of any company that claims to be able to bring your listing on page 1 overnight. Certain methods can get a website banned from search engines so be cautious as to who you choose to work with. Notice the keywords used, the result and the position our client is in. They are #3 on the first page of Google. Now, this is not as difficult as the example above but it certainly puts them in a better position over their competitors not to mention the new clients that they are acquiring thanks to being on Google's first page.

Local Search Engine Optimization

If you take a look at the example above you will notice the first ten search results next to the map. These "top ten" are a list of businesses within close proximity to the search location and just by looking you know that the list is in a prominent position. Local search algorithm is a bit more complex than regular keyword search. There are no specific steps or set guidelines that will get any business listed within this group contrary to what some professionals may say. We did however; conduct some research which resulted in us coming to the following conclusions which may help your local listing.

    1. Get inbound links from local community websites, local web directories and your local chamber of commerce.
    2. List your business address on every page of your website. (Your business has to be located within the search location)
    3. Claim ownership of the listing with Google and verify all of the information listed.
    4. Look at your competitor's website. Find out where they are getting their links and do the same if you can.

Some may say that reviews will help improve your ranking but after reviewing several websites, we don't see this as being a major factor. Some of the websites we've seen in the first position don't even have any reviews but of course it never hurts to have one.

Like regular keyword search rankings, local search rankings takes time but using the services to get your website listed will prove to be beneficial for your business and put you in a competitive advantage over your counterparts.

Do I Need SEO?

To put it simply, yes, you need SEO. Just because you've managed to get your website on the first page of Google does not mean it will remain in the top position(s) unless you continuously work on keeping it there. SEO, to some degree, is an art form and you have to really know what you are doing in order to get the results. Having a website and not utilizing any SEO technique could render your website virtually invisible to traffic.
